Established in 1991, this 890 km² marine park lies at the centre of the Coral Triangle and shelters an extraordinary 390 species of coral and some 2,000 species of fish. Its signature 25–50 metre vertical coral walls drop into depths of up to 1,840 metres, with visibility reaching 35–40 metres. Expect sea turtles, blacktip reef sharks, dugongs, dolphins and — between November and April — passing whales.
One of the easiest places in the world to see the spectral tarsier — a nocturnal primate that has remained virtually unchanged for 45 million years. Tangkoko is also home to the critically endangered crested black macaque (yaki), the maleo megapode, hornbills and 328 bird species, 47 of them endemic. Best at dawn and dusk, and just 1.5–2.5 hours from Manado.

Its Rambu Solo funeral ceremonies are among the most elaborate in the world — the deceased is considered “sick” until the ritual, which can involve hundreds of guests and buffalo sacrifices. Meaning “clouds or mist” in the Makassar language, this is the second-largest karst cluster on Earth, part of the Maros-Pangkep UNESCO Global Geopark.
